Are The Mets Really Going To Give Tim Tebow A Chance To Make It To The Major Leagues?

Tim Tebow did it. He actually—*mouth agape in total shock*—did it. About one month after expressing interest in becoming a professional baseball player and arranging for a tryout in front of almost every single Major League Baseball team, Tebow got a minor league contract offer from the New York Mets on Thursday and he agreed to it. He will take part in the fall instructional league in Florida later this month and officially become a part of an MLB franchise. But will his pro baseball career extend beyond that? And will the Mets actually give him a chance to make it all the way to the major leagues one day?

The chances of Tebow making the Mets roster at any point in the coming years are low. Extremely low. It’s very difficult to make it to the major leagues, and there are guys that Tebow will compete with and against in the coming months who have been working their entire lives to make it. So they’re going to have a leg up on him and, in all likelihood, he will not make it to the majors. But despite this, the Mets contend that they did not sign Tebow simply to earn some free publicity. Instead, they intend on giving Tebow a fair shake and seeing what he can do on the baseball field.

“While I and the organization, I think, are mindful of the novel nature of this situation, this decision was strictly driven by baseball,” Mets general manager Sandy Alderson said on Thursday. “This was not something that was driven by marketing considerations or anything of the sort. We are extremely intrigued with the potential that Tim has.”

At 29, Tebow doesn’t have much time to lean on his “potential.” Unlike a 20-year-old player, he’s going to be expected to make big strides with the Mets right away. But at the very least, Tebow is getting a chance to prove he can play baseball, and isn’t that all he asked for? He’s receiving the opportunity of a lifetime, and now, it’s up to him to make the most of it.
