Is Donald Trump Causing Havoc In NFL Locker Rooms?

As a general rule of thumb, it’s probably not a good idea for you to talk about politics with your coworkers. Unless you get extremely lucky, there’s a good chance that your beliefs won’t be an exact match with Suzy from payroll or Bob from HR, and while common sense would tell you that that’s OK, most people love to bicker when it comes to politics. So before you know it, you could very well end up sitting down with Bob from HR—assuming he’s not the one you’re fighting with—talking about your job status because of an argument you’ve had with a coworker.

This rule of thumb should apply to NFL players as well, but according to a new Bleacher Report report, there are more than a few NFL players who are at odds right now over the rise of Donald Trump. B/R found that there are plenty of players who are in support of Trump, but there are also quite a few who can’t stand him and have taken to arguing with their own teammates over everything Trump stands for. Most NFL players refused to go on the record with B/R, but they revealed that Trump has become a divisive figure within locker rooms.

“I was talking Trump and Hillary Clinton with a white teammate, and the conversation was just fine,” one player who wished to remain anonymous said. “Things got a little heated when he said, ‘Trump isn’t racist.’ I don’t know how anyone doesn’t see how that’s just not true. We talked about that statement for days.”

That player went on to say that he continued arguing with his teammate for about four days after that when the teammate brought up Trump again. It sounds like it’s a hot topic in NFL circles—and one that could potentially cause problems for many teams. And it’s already become especially problematic in the Buffalo Bills’ locker room, ever since head coach Rex Ryan introduced Trump at a rally in April. Some Bills players are still having trouble wrapping their minds around it.

“Rex is such an open-minded guy, a really good person,” one Bills player told B/R. “But the fact he could back someone as close-minded as Trump genuinely shocked me.”

It’s not surprising to hear any of this, but it is surprising to hear that NFL players don’t seem to know better than to bring politics to work. It’s a recipe for disaster, and over the next month, it’s only going to get worse as we inch closer and closer to the election.
