The FBI announced today it had thwarted a plot to bomb a housing complex in western Kansas that is home to many Somali Muslims.

Curtis Allen and Gavin Wright, both 49, and of Liberal, Kansas, and Patrick Eugene Stein, 47, of Wright, Kansas, appeared in court on Friday to face charges of conspiring to use weapons of mass destruction. Based on the FBI’s press release, the men were free as recently as Thursday, and were discussing their plan with a person they did not know was an FBI employee. The arrests were the culmination of an eight-month investigation.

The men are part of a militia they call The Crusaders, and were reportedly motivated by anti-immigrant and anti-Muslim sentiment. They believed their attack would “wake people up.”

The housing complex they targeted is in Garden City, Kansas, which is also home to a meatpacking plant that has attracted much of the immigrant population.

The attacks were planned for Nov. 9th, “so as to not affect the general election,” according to the Kansas City Star.

The investigation may have accelerated this week after Allen’s girlfriend reported his major stash of weapons and ammunition to the Liberal Police Department, following a domestic dispute.
