Did Derrick Rose Consider Retiring During His Disappearance From The Knicks?

When Derrick Rose disappeared prior to a Knicks game earlier this week and didn’t tell anyone where he was going, there were many people who thought that he might be upset with the way his time with the team was playing out. According to reports, Rose was angry about being benched for the fourth quarter of the team’s previous game—and he didn’t like the direction that he was headed in as a member of the Knicks. There was even some speculation about him possibly retiring from the NBA. It seemed crazy to think that he would call it quits seemingly out of nowhere, but the whole situation was so bizarre that the idea of him potentially retiring didn’t even seem that crazy.

Ultimately, Rose returned to the Knicks less than 24 hours after disappearing, and he told reporters that he had been back in Chicago visiting his mother and handling a family issue. He didn’t say what that issue involved, and frankly, he has a right to keep his personal life as private as he wants. But the retirement talk didn’t end there. Even though he said he was with his mother, there was still some question of whether or not he really wanted to be back with the Knicks, and he didn’t do himself any favors by being so vague about his whereabouts during his disappearance.

The Knicks reportedly decided to fine Rose a whopping $200,000 for disappearing on them, according to the New York Post, and it sounds like Rose was willing to accept that fine. But what he wasn’t willing to accept when he spoke with reporters late Wednesday night were questions about the possibility of him retiring. He told reporters that he didn’t consider retiring from basketball at any time and reiterated that he left the team to be with his mom.

“That’s something I don’t even want to speak into existence by commenting on it,” he said. “I don’t know who would do that. Not at all. I was with my family.”

At this point, we’ll all have to just take Rose’s word for it. If he says that he was with his family and there’s nothing more to it, then that’s probably where the story is going to end, at least as far as Rose is concerned. But with Rose preparing to become a free agent this summer and his future with the Knicks in doubt, we should get some indication of what he wants to do with his career within the next six months. Until then, there are going to continue to be more questions than answers about his commitment to the Knicks and his NBA career as a whole.
