Would The Cavaliers Actually Consider Trading Kevin Love?

When the Cleveland Cavaliers made a trade for Kevin Love back in 2014 shortly after welcoming LeBron James back into the fold, the thought was that Love would likely spend the rest of his career with the Cavs. He was on the verge of becoming a free agent, but he was also going to be entering into a situation where he could win lots of championships if he bought into the Cleveland system and learned to play effectively alongside LeBron and Kyrie Irving. So it looked like Love was going to be with the team for a long, long time.

After some early struggles with the Cavs, Love has found his role on the team, and at this point, he has blossomed into the kind of player Cleveland expected him to be when they first traded for him. But despite his many successes with the team, the trade rumors surrounding him have only intensified in recent weeks. Most recently, there was some talk about Cleveland possibly trading Love to the New York Knicks in exchange for Carmelo Anthony.

The Cavs shut down those trade talks almost immediately, and according to reports, they told the Knicks that Love wasn’t available. But according to other reports, the Cavs haven’t completely ruled out the idea of parting ways with Love at some point. And while you might expect Love to be upset about that, he spoke about the trade rumors on Friday and said he’s come to expect them.

“I predicted that,” Love said when asked specifically about the Knicks trade rumors in light of the fact that the Cavs are prepping to play in New York this weekend. “I said it doesn’t matter if I have an All-Star year or its one start or the other, it’s always going to be there, right?”

Love also added that “it’s good to be wanted” and that the trade rumors are “just part of the growth process” for him as a player.

He might be right. He’s at that stage in his career where he could potentially be a valuable asset for the Cavs, if they were to trade him. But after all that Love has been through in Cleveland, it almost feels like it would be a waste for the Cavs to even consider the possibility of moving him. He has endured a series of struggles and has overcome them, while carving out a niche for himself on the team. So why give up on him now?

Unfortunately, the trade rumors surrounding Love aren’t going to slow down anytime soon. They’re probably always going to be there, as long as he’s playing at a high level. But the Cavs shouldn’t act on them—and Love shouldn’t let them bother him too much. Because we highly doubt the Cavs would be crazy enough to trade a player like him at this point in his career.
