Draymond Green Rips Nicki Minaj For Mentioning LeBron James’ Name In “Every Song”
Nicki Minaj released three new songs late last week, and one of those songs in particular caught the ear of Golden State Warriors star Draymond Green. It seems he raised an eyebrow after he heard “No Frauds” for the first time.
It wasn’t because Nicki responded to Remy Ma’s scathing diss track, “shETHER,” though. Rather, it was because Nicki casually name-dropped LeBron James on the song when she rapped, “They say numbers don’t matter but when they discussin’ the kings/They turn around and say LeBron ain’t got six rings.”
It caught Green’s attention because it’s most definitely not the first time Nicki has mentioned LeBron on a song. Or the second. Or the third. Or…well, you get the point. LeBron has popped up in several Nicki verses in recent history, and it seems Green is annoyed by this. So on the latest episode of his Dray Day podcast, Green decided to call Nicki out for leaning on LeBron so often. He would rather Nicki didn’t do it.
“Is Nicki Minaj gonna mention Bron in every song?” Green asked. “Every song she’s released since June 2016, there’s something about LeBron in it. I mean, damn, like, LeBron is great, but Jesus Christ. At some point, it just becomes…too repetitive. Jesus Christ, you can’t mention Bron in every song you do.”
Green has a point. As we mentioned, Nicki gone to the LeBron well early and often lately. She name-dropped him on “Don’t Hurt Me” and “Do You Mind” in addition to “No Frauds.” But at the same time, can you blame her? A quick Genius search reveals that everyone has name-dropped LeBron at one time or another. From Jay Z to Big Sean to Rick Ross, LeBron’s name is all over dozens and dozens of rap songs at this point.
So why did Green take issue with Nicki in particular? Maybe he was just having a bad day. Or maybe he’s still upset about Nicki poking fun at him for hitting LeBron below the belt last season. Whatever the case, we wouldn’t expect it to stop Nicki from including LeBron’s name in her songs. In fact, she might ramp it up and use it more now that she knows it makes Green mad.
