Can You Believe Roger Goodell Is Actually Going To Show Up For A Patriots Game Next Season?
We don’t know if you’ve noticed this yet, but New England Patriots fans do not like NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell very much. In reality, there are lots and lots of NFL fans out there who don’t like Goodell, but Patriots fans have a stronger hatred than most for him. Goodell was one of the central figures in the Deflategate scandal that rocked the Patriots organization over the course of the last few years, and he was responsible for issuing Tom Brady a four-game suspension at the start of last season. So Goodell is one of the most hated men in the New England area.
For that reason, Goodell has kept his distance when it has come to attending Patriots home games in recent years. He had the opportunity to attend the AFC Championship Game back in January, but he chose to attend the NFC Championship Game instead. Most Patriots fans accused him of being too scared to show his face in Massachusetts. And while he downplayed those accusations, it didn’t seem like Goodell exactly went out of his way to try and make it to the Patriots game. He appeared to sense the tension and hostility that would greet him there.
It sounds like Goodell might finally give in and get himself to a Patriots game next season, though. On Tuesday, he revealed that he plans to be at the Patriots home owner on the NFL’s opening night in September. It’s unclear who the Patriots are going to play that night, but Goodell said he will be there. “I plan on being at the kickoff game,” he said.
This has been a long time coming, and it’s good to hear that Goodell is just going to get this over with and show up for a Patriots game. He made it through the awkwardness of handing Brady and his head coach Bill Belichick the Lombardi Trophy after the Patriots won the Super Bowl in February. And he survived attending a press conference with Brady the very next day. So while it won’t be easy for him to show up at Gillette Stadium for a Patriots game—can’t you hear the boos now?—he needs to just do it and get it over with. It’s the last thing that needs to happen before we can move on from Deflategate and that whole nightmare once and for all.
