Could Conor McGregor Really Earn $75 Million For His Fight Against Floyd Mayweather?
There are still a lot of people out there who are skeptical about the idea of Conor McGregor taking on Floyd Mayweather in a fight. They don’t think McGregor would risk his reputation and potentially get manhandled in the boxing ring in exchange for a paycheck. But once those people hear about just how much McGregor could potentially make, they might think otherwise and see why McGregor is entertaining the idea of fighting Mayweather.
UFC president Dana White appeared on Fox Sports 1’s The Herd on Wednesday, and during his appearance, he spoke at length about the McGregor/Mayweather bout, since that seems to be the only thing people want to talk to him about these days. And he estimated that McGregor could stand to make as much as $75 million in a fight against Mayweather. The final total would, of course, depend on sales of the fight, but White thinks McGregor could easily dwarf the amount of money he’s made in the UFC with a single fight against Mayweather.
“If the fight sells as well as I think it can,” White said, “Floyd makes a little north of $100 [million] and Conor makes $75 [million].”
White went on to say that he hasn’t even started the process of negotiating fight terms with Mayweather. “We really haven’t got into that negotiation yet,” he said. “I wanted to get McGregor locked in first because McGregor is under contract with me.”
But he said that, while he doesn’t really have a whole lot at stake in the fight, he wants to see it happen as much as everyone else does. “Does this fight make a ton of sense for me?” he said. “It really doesn’t. But Conor wants this thing really bad, and I’ve said this many times: The kid’s stepped up and saved some big fights for me. I’m in. I’ll figure it out.”
If White can guarantee McGregor and Mayweather anything even close to $75 and $100 million, it would be a shock if this fight doesn’t happen. That kind of money doesn’t come around everyday, so if these two fighters have the opportunity to make it for less than an hour of work, they would be absolutely crazy not to take it and give the fans the fight they’ve been waiting to see.
Do you think McGregor could really make that much money fighting Mayweather, or will Mayweather make it difficult for him to get such a large payout when he hasn’t ever taken part in a boxing match before?
