Despite a soggy track, Always Dreaming met expectations to win the 143rd Kentucky Derby this week by 2 and 3/4 lengths.

Trainer Todd Pletcher and jockey John Velazquez both wracked up their second victories in the race, and their first together. They are not the winningest duo in race history, have competed a combined total of 63 times heading in to this weekend.

Always dreaming was the favorite to win, with 9-2 odds. It is the fifth year in a row that a Derby favorite has won, tying the span from 1892 – 1896 as the longest stretch that has happened.

Second and third place were taken by longer shots: 33-1 Lookin At Lee and 40-1 Battle of Midway.
