The Lakers Are Hoping Kim Kardashian’s Trainer Can Give Them The Lift They Need Next Season

The Los Angeles Lakers were a mediocre rebounding team during the 2016-17 NBA regular season. Even though they have a lot of young, talented players on their roster, they only averaged 43.5 rebounds per game, according to ESPN’s stats, while giving up an average of 44.4 rebounds per game, good for 17th in the NBA. They could have been worse—playoff teams like the Toronto Raptors, Utah Jazz, and Memphis Grizzlies landed lower on the rebounding list than they did—but they also could have been much better. And next season, they might be a whole lot better at boxing out and grabbing rebounds thanks to their latest hire.

Under normal circumstances, the Lakers—or any other NBA team really—hiring a new strength and conditioning coach wouldn’t make many headlines. But on Wednesday, the Lakers decided to hire celebrity fitness guru Gunnar Peterson to be their new strength coach. And this is noteworthy because Peterson is best known for training Kim Kardashian and helping her sculpt her now-famous backside. He has also worked with the likes of Jennifer Lopez, Sofia Vergara, and Angelina Jolie, but he made a name for himself by working with Kardashian and has also worked with her sisters Khloe and Kendall Jenner. So when NBA fans heard about the hire, their first thought was “The Lakers aren’t going to have trouble grabbing rebounds anymore.”

The Lakers didn’t address Peterson’s connection to Kardashian after bringing him on board. But Lakers new general manager Rob Pelinka did say that he’s looking forward to the “new mentality” Peterson will bring to the team next season. “Gunnar is a true pioneer and visionary at his craft, and will bring a new mentality to our weight room which we are all very excited about,” Pelinka said. “Since Magic and I have worked with Gunnar in the past, we have a strong relationship with him, which makes working together now feel seamless.”

It remains to be seen whether or not Peterson will give the Lakers a boost in the rebounding department next spring. But the Lakers’ hire has already given the team even more star power than it already had thanks to the Kardashian connection.
