Magic Johnson Compares LaVar and Lonzo Ball to Kris Jenner and the Kardashians

Are the Los Angeles Lakers going to draft Lonzo Ball with the second pick in the 2017 NBA Draft? That’s what a whole bunch of NBA fans are wondering right now—but it apparently isn’t going to get Lakers president Magic Johnson to show his hand anytime soon. He’s been asked about the possibility of drafting Ball on several different occasions since the Lakers won the No. 2 pick in the draft earlier this month, and he’s refused to say whether or not he wants to take Ball with the pick.

But Magic did just reveal that he’s not going to let Lonzo’s dad LaVar influence his decision. There are some NBA teams who are reportedly not interested in Lonzo simply because of his outspoken father, who has made headlines over and over again over the course of the last few months for saying all kinds of outlandish things. During an appearance on ESPN Radio Los Angeles on Wednesday, though, Magic said that he gives LaVar “a lot of credit” for the way he has gone about parenting his son. Magic also compared LaVar to Kris Jenner and said that he doesn’t see a big difference between the way she has parented the Kardashian clan and the way LaVar has handled the upbringing of Lonzo and his other two sons LiAngelo and LaMelo.

“The Kardashians, we didn’t say that the mom was bad, and she made them a lot of money, right?” Magic said. “She’s bragged on her daughters, and I think it’s the same here. He’s just saying, ‘Hey, my son is great,’ and there’s nothing wrong with that. So we’re not looking at LaVar being a problem if we’re blessed to have the opportunity to draft Lonzo.”

Magic stopped just short of saying that the Lakers will draft Lonzo. “We don’t know at this time if we’re going to do that,” he said.

But the writing seems to be on the wall here, doesn’t it? If they really wanted to, the Lakers could probably figure out a way to sneak up to the No. 1 slot to select Markelle Fultz. The Celtics have the top seed, and it seems like they might be willing to work out a deal with another team, if that team is willing to pay dearly for the top pick. But if all goes according to plan and the Lakers stay at No. 2 and have the chance to take Ball, it would be shocking to see them go in a different direction. And Magic’s words seem to suggest that they’re already mentally preparing for all the baggage that will come along with having Lonzo on their team.

“I have no problem with LaVar,” Magic said towards the end of his interview.

We’ll have to wait and see if he feels that same way if and when Lonzo joins the Lakers and LaVar officially becomes his problem.
