Can You Believe the Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor Fight Is Actually Going to Happen?

When a report emerged way back in May 2016 indicating that Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor were seriously entertaining the idea of fighting one another in a boxing match, most boxing experts scoffed at the idea. Mayweather is 49-0 and widely considered to be one of the best boxers of all time. And while Conor McGregor has enjoyed his fair share of success in the MMA world, the thought was that he would have no chance boxing against Mayweather. So why in the world would he even bother?

Since then, the stakes surrounding the fight have gotten a lot higher. Mayweather and McGregor have spent the last year sparring verbally on social media, with both fighters sending shots in the other’s direction. As a result, they have hyped up the fight so much that, even though it doesn’t seem like McGregor would stand a chance against Mayweather, people still want to see what the two men would do if they were put into the same ring together. There is a high demand for the fight.

And it sounds like people are going to get their wish and get to see Mayweather and McGregor do battle. On Wednesday, Yahoo! Sports reported that Mayweather and McGregor have officially agreed to the terms of a fight. It’s unclear what those terms are, but it seems that Mayweather in particular was unable to walk away from the thought of making somewhere in the neighborhood of $100 million for what could be a short fight. So according to Yahoo! Sports, he’s going to do battle with McGregor on August 26 at either the MGM Grand Garden or T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The fight will reportedly be shown on Showtime, and the entire card that night will be handled by Mayweather Promotions.

There will be a lot at stake for both Mayweather and McGregor. Mayweather will be looking to move to a perfect 50-0 for his career while padding his bank account with another nine figures. McGregor, meanwhile, will be looking to avoid embarrassing himself. And if by some chance he’s able to upset Mayweather, it could go down as one of the most shocking results of all time in any sport.

Frankly, we can’t believe that we’ve reached this point. Like most people, we expected the Mayweather/McGregor rumors to die down shortly after they started last year. But they didn’t, and now, we’ve got what will definitely be one of the most exciting sporting events of the year on the calendar. Can you believe it?
