Glenn Barton, 19, NY

“My name is Glenn Barton. I am a 19-year-old current college student who has lived a life well beyond my years; a life overflowing with what my family like to call ‘trials and tribulations’. Here’s my story, straight from the heart.

“I grew up in New York City. At the age of 12 I was shot, at the age of 14 I was selling drugs, and by the age of 15, I was incarcerated for something ‘I didn’t do’ – meaning something I truly didn’t want to do. But when in Rome, one must do and live like the Romans do, right?

“That being said, at such a young age the streets became home. I took on the code of those streets with a vengeance: NEVER SNITCH. Only later – by the grace of God, not too late – I found out I was being honest to a disloyal game.

“I believe this is an important lesson for all of us coming up in the hip-hop generation.

“Nowadays what motivates me to become a successful person is just as simple as knowing you only get and have one life. What you do with people and for people lasts longer then any tangible gift.

“Time is so precious; I learned that at a very early age. Not young enough, however, to prevent me from going though various hardships and almost becoming just another product of my environment. You live and you learn.

“So today I live. I live and am motived by my passions and this gift of life. I am inspired most of all by my current situation, and the things I’m doing to make my environment a product of me – not the other way around.

“Thank you DrJays.com for giving us the opportunity to express ourselves – and just like your company’s story, mine is a tale of success coming straight from New York City.”
