Derrick Martin, 33, UT

“I am writing for my three children who have the best father in the world, Derrick Martin.
“He is and will always be our King! We think he deserves to be King For A Day because of his undying love for his kids.
“My husband, Derrick Martin, came into my life when I was 15 years old. We met in high school and lost touch shortly after. We reconnected 14 years later and began dating. I was a young widow trying to raise two sons on my own. Derrick came into our lives wholehearted and began to help me raise my two boys without hesitation.
“Derrick had recently lost his mother when we started dating. His mother was his everything and it was extremely hard for him to carry on and live his life without her around. He struggled daily with this loss. Although he was sad a lot and seemed to think of his mother every waking moment, his struggle seemed to lessen a little bit with the birth of our youngest son, Mekhi. He seemed to have a new desire to live his life and be the best father he could be. I believe the greatest day of his life was when Mekhi was born. He waited 32 years to be a father because he wanted to be the best father and make sure that he would always be there for his kids, and he has been!
“Although our two oldest sons are not his biological children, he treats them as if they are. He has always referred to them as our kids. When our middle son made his first touchdown in football, he cried because he was so proud of him. He has been there at all the kids sporting events to cheer them on. He has recently been taking swimming lessons with our 3 year old. He gets in the water with him and helps him even though he never learned how to swim and has until now been afraid to get into a swimming pool. He encourages our kids daily and makes sure they are growing up to be intelligent, respectable black men.
“This is why he is the perfect representation of the AKOO brand. He is handsome, professional, and intelligent. Most of all though, he is the best father I know.”
